A passport was primarily intended to act as a "letter of recommendation" rather than as a means of identifying the bearer. The purpose of passports has changed from recommendations to protect authenticity by recording identity and nationality.
Nowadays depending on where you are from and where your passport was issued, it determines how easy it is to travel around the world. People are dehumanised within a passport’s pages and deprived of their individuality and humanity.
《纸上的国籍》是一本揭示护照制度不平等以及其背后隐藏的商业市场的小册子。在第一次世界大战之前，出国旅行并不一定需要护照。最初，护照主要被视为一封“推荐信”，而不是用来识别持有者身份的工具。然而，护照不再只是通行的凭证，而成了验证一个人身份与国籍的工具。如今，一个人来自哪里、护照由哪个国家签发，几乎决定了他们在世界上旅行的自由程度。护照的几页纸，将人简化为一个个符号与数据，个性与人性被无情抹去。
